Some time ago I posted a link to a site describing a woman's solo motorcycle trips through the Chernonyl area ... well, it
turns out that while she did visit the area, it was one guided 'tour' in an official car. She did, however, bring a motorcycle helmet. They organized their trip through a Kyiv travel agency and the administration of the Chernobyl zone (and not her father). They were given the same standard excursion that most Chernobyl tourists receive.
It still doesn't lessen the impact of the pictures, just removes the image of a lone motorcyclist puttering through the evacuated zone. The web site is gone, BTW.
EDIT:
Related links: take an
all-day tour of Chernobyl and see the containment sarcophagus (starts at $193 US per person, cheaper for groups); a more detailed
debunking of the lone motorcyclist site;
Stalker, a film that
eerily described the disaster and the evacuated zone some six years in advance ...
