[livejournal.com profile] dark_fang's home system refused to boot -- even to the BIOS -- a couple of weeks ago, and we broke down and ordered matching MB/CPU/memory/video cards for the first upgrade in about five years for both of us.

The hardware finally arrived today, and I assembled DarkFang's system first; he's upstairs convincing the Windows OS and assorted other Microsoft programs he uses that he is not running pirated copies (he's not), thanks to the new MB/CPU combo.

I'll get my MB populated tonight, but since I'll have to bring this system down (and re-box it for other uses) to change over, I'll wait until tomorrow morning to finish.

What did we get?
  • AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz CPU

  • ASRock M3A770DE motherboard

  • 4GB DDR3 1333 memory (two sticks of 2GB)

  • OCZ Fatal1ty 550W modular power supply

  • MSI N460GTX Cyclone 1GD5 video card

I think we'll notice the difference, since we were each running a single core, 2Ghz CPU with 2GB and GeForce 7600 video cards ...

Not really......I'm still running a
single core!
But,....Generally speaking, for the work
Darkfang and Ysengrin do, I will agree with
you on that point of retiring the last 2 single
core machines on the planet.

I had a 2.6gHz Athlon 64 system. Single core. not very fast

It was only ever so slightly faster than the Atom D525 I recently put together.. Though the atom feels snappier overall.. And uses about 1/8 the electricity.

And my Dual core i5 netbook stomps it. :)

That 460 is going to blow your minds. Oh, and when you used a program like Corel VideoStudio X3, even high def video can be worked on in real time -- it uses the cores of the card to improve rendering for editing and to speed up your final renders. Trust me, even at 99$, if you play with video and shoot with hidef camcorders, you will love how Videostudio plus that 460 goes through highdef like it was nothing.

Ysengrin here ....

Well, the upgraded-multiple-times windows OS finally puked, so I'm reinstalling it, clean.

Ubuntu was up to date and functional in about thirty minutes.

Windows is going on six hours and isn't anywhere near done.

Yes, I'm impressed.
