Ah, the things you find while looking for other things ... this time, the plague

I've known for many years that the Bubonic Plague has been present in the rodent population in the American west - you can hardly live out this way without knowing. But, I came across a pair of articles (by the same author) that suggest the source was San Francisco around 1900 (pre great quake).
