Last week we heard about a US Marine handing out coins bearing John 3:16 in Arabic. Not a well-thought out idea, and part of a larger trend of some servicemen passing along Arabic translations of bible study tracts and Jack Chick tracts. In this case, it was a single individual who (according to Iraqi witnesses) handed out roughly ten coins and who is now being prosecuted for violation of military regulations (General Order 1A, Part 2, Section J in particular, which strictly prohibits "proselytizing of any religion, faith or practice," if you ever need to wave this about).

While I find this method of "spreading the word" amusing between random strangers, it becomes ominous when being done by a figure of authority and is toxic when being done by someone standing in dominant authority. This Marine -- manning a check point -- was grossly in the wrong, whatever the message he was trying to pass along (though "eat at Joe's" would be significantly less inflammatory).

For the story behind the "Where Will You Spend Eternity" coin, read here; scroll past the Mr. Eternity article.

Tangently related, here's a ten commandments coin -- with a website URL stamped on it, natch. You gotta drive traffic somehow, one assumes.

For those who have downloaded and/or seen Big Buck Bunny ... have you spotted the USS Enterprise cameo (as a cluster of mushrooms)?

EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=allOsEHARo8 for those who don't want to mess with the download (though the Enterprise cameo is not legible at that size and compression).

Ysengrin and Sake

Ysengrin cradles a (then unopened) bottle of Genbei San No Oni Koroshi ("Demon Slayer"). Originally the term was applied to sake so bad it would kill a demon, though in modern times it's used for sake so good it would kill a demon. In either case, werewolves drink it just fine.

Now, I just need to track down a bottle of Kumejima's Kumesen awamori ...
