ysengrin: Yep, that's me. (Default)
Saw Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire at the Metreon - on the IMAX screen.

No spoilers, but .... eh. I knew a lot was going to be cut, but this film just doesn't have the spark that made the last one so enjoyable. Nor does it have the story development that made the novel so enjoyable.

EDIT: The two people I saw it with have not read any of the books - and they had the same comments about it not having that spark. It's not that the film isn't technically well done, or that the acting isn't good (the interplay between Ron, Harry and Hermione works much better on screen), or that important bits are cut from the book (as it stands, the film *is* coherent - mostly - and to make it fit I'd have to agree with the way the story was trimmed). The movie is doing fine, fanning that 'spark' (that I can't quite put my finger on) quite well until - to me - partway through the second test. It's fanned again briefly when the final test ends through the end, but for a sizable chunk of the movie it feels more like actors rushing to fit scenes in - however adept - rather than telling a story. Put another way, they lost sight of the magic.

It's not a bad movie, but it's not a great one, either. (END EDIT)

We walked over to Chinatown, had dinner (the best General Chao's Chicken I've ever had), picked up a three-legged toad and a lion dance mirror dangly.
