Nice article at Pharyngula; feel free to go read it. He starts off talking about a recent PBS newshour, and has the disturbing quote from one of the students:

"I believe that God also made us. I just think it's a lot easier to believe then the big bang theory, or any of the other theories about apes."

Why, yes, I'm sure it is easier. Try to remember that when you're fifty and asking if they want fries with their order.

EDIT: Yeah, it's a bit harsh - but using God as an excuse to not learn is pretty damn poor judgement. You can be an effective scientist and hold strong religous beliefs - many do.

The new picture of the week is up.

Gravestone Rose - This is a detail of a gravestone in Evergreen Cemetery, Santa Cruz, California. The stone is laying flat on the ground, having fallen over at some point, and the recesses of the design are filled with rain water. The gravestone is for Reuben H. Sawin, died May 2, 1884, aged 82.

Once again, I was sick this weekend, so the Picture of the Week is running late.

Article is here (though that's not a permalink and will likely be gone in a week).

Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, district attorney Bruce Castor says the motive appears to be jealousy, but they are also looking into some sort of connection with Dungeons and Dragons:

"I mean, you have many, many stab wounds and those 'Dungeons and Dragons' fantasy games involve swords and knives and daggers and things of that nature. There may be a connection but I can’t say for sure."

EDIT: Sorry, I did mean to do this ... Politics )
