8 Jan 2005 04:47 pmA museum guard at the Baltimore Museum of Art exhibit in Raleigh, NC, told the parents of a second grader who was sketching that sketching was prohibited because the great masterpieces are copyright protected. Sketching existing art has been s.o.p. for art students for as long as I can remember - it's a good way to learn by example for those of us who are tactile learners. The museum did later correct the guard:

Actually, the museum guard was mistaken. There was no copyright issue, and the museum apologizes and is telling artists to sketch away as long as they do not interrupt the flow of traffic in the always crowded gallery.
