The Exploritorium

"Something Incredibly Wonderful Happens": Frank Oppenheimer and the birth of the modern science museum over at Bioephemera.

If you've never visited the Exploratorium, well, it's a unique experience. A lot of the trend in hands-on exhibits started there. Oppenheimer, in his own words: "the whole point of the Exploratorium is for people to feel they have the capacity to understand things."

Exploratorium visits were on a regular itinerary during SF visits when I took them as an annual vacation back when I lived in SoCal. They had free admission days that I tended to plan my visits around.

The Reuben H. Fleet Space Theatre and Science Center in San Diego has a similar hands-on thought, but nowhere near the scope. Going to the Exploratorium was nothing short of wondrous, like walking into a huge laboratory - or now that I've seen the show, Mythbusters back lot.
