Happy Whelpday

Happy Whelpday to Nikola Tesla. Afraid that he doesn't have an LJ, though :)

Weird. I was thinking about him just the other day.

Actually not so weird, considering all the internet articles on Tesla Coils I've collected.

Anyway, lets all give a heartfelt thanks to Tesla and Mr. Westinghouse; without them we'd all be using DC power and there'd be an Edison generating plant about every mile - to keep voltages from sagging too much in transmission.

Now you've made me think of Edison Balls. Ohm, sweet Ohm.

They have actually gone BACK to usng DC ...at colossal voltages (500Kv and more), for long distance power transmission. It is only the adbvances in Solid state rectifiers and inverters ( the devices that chop up DC into AC again) that have made it possible.

Whwn you look at it ,a Tesla coil is merely an air cored high frequency transformer.. A computer switched mode power supply, if you will, on steroids.
