Dragon Feet Buildup

Here, Ysengrin is starting on the buildup for the dragon feet sculpture. There's a lifecast of a large - size 14 - pair of dive booties being used as the core of these sculptures. At this point, there is only the suggestion of the shape of the finished feet. Those are also the test claws from last week being used.

Location: In the workshop

Yes, these are the "scaly" feet. I'm posting some in-progress photos of the sculptures so folks can see how I develop them. At this point, they're a suggestion of what is to come rather than a derailed form.

Dragon Feet Shaped

Now the dragon feet have been given their base shape. They've been made a bit taller (about 11") and the underlying forms have been better defined.

Location: In the workshop

All the underlying structure has been sketched in, and I've cut back the thickness as much as I'm comfortable with. I also had to tweak the upper legs - one foot cast had the leg leaning back farther than the other.

Dragon Feet Front Scales

The big overlapping scale plates for the front have now been added. This is just the start of the finer detailing. There are more large scales for the back of the foot, some medium overlapping scales to add, and a whole bunch of smaller scales. Ysengrin made three quick press-type molds to make the individual scales used since the scales were too big to uniformly cut from a roll of clay.

Location: In the workshop

This is where it really gets to be fun :) The scales are about 1/8" thick, and I made a couple of two-part ultracal molds to press clay into to make the scales. I also made a cutout in 1/4" cardboard to press clay into to make the really big plates at the top of the leg, making the ridges by hand. The central ridges were part of the ultracal molds for the smaller scales.
