"...the U.S. doesn’t have the same tradition of religion-bashing satire that can be found in Europe..." - an AP opinion article today about Charlie Hebdo.

Maybe that AP writer doesn't get out much. In the U.S., Christianity gets satirized pretty often from what I see, and has for decades.

So, if I'm reading that writer correctly — you got freedom of speech, but you're not using it; we don't, but we are. Got it.

Anti-Catholic satire can be traced back to colonial America.
It's been around for hundreds of years.

The writer is confusing France with Europe/i> in particular. French caricatures have a very crass style that's pretty unique to the country.

I've found http://understandingcharliehebdo.com (http://understandingcharliehebdo.com) to be a good starting place for that sort of thing. (even though it loads somewhat slowly at the moment)

Ah! That makes more sense. Some American satire has a similar edge, but it's not common.
