Fremont (California) cracks down on haunted house

"We didn't think that having a haunted house in your backyard is illegal."

It was to have been their sixth year of the home-based haunt, but I can see how a 12-room, 1500 square foot temporary wooden structure would give the fire marshal a fit ...

Yeah... I really wanted to kind of be in favor of the owner, thinking the city was being a jerk, but when I read "That includes getting fire extinguishers and emergency exit signs, maybe even smoke detectors," they lost all sympathy. "Maybe even smoke detectors?!?" If THAT is a major expense for something like this, I hate to think of what other safety issues there might be.
